Why is osteopathy particularly effective for babies?
Newborns possess exceptional adaptive capacities that make pediatric osteopathy remarkably effective during the first months of life. With over 14 years of experience as a baby osteopath in Bern and Bulle, I’ve witnessed daily this remarkable tissue plasticity in infants.
Unlike adults, babies are not yet affected by chronic stress and accumulated compensations built up over years. Their bodies respond quickly and effectively to gentle osteopathic techniques, allowing us to resolve tensions before they become established.
Baby tensions: from intrauterine life to birth
The final months of pregnancy
During the last months of intrauterine life, lack of space can create significant constraints on the baby’s body. Breech positions, twins, narrow maternal pelvis, or simply a good-sized baby in an increasingly restricted space: all these situations can generate muscular and articular tensions in the newborn.
These positional constraints can affect:
- Skull symmetry
- Neck mobility
- Hip positioning
- Spinal alignment
Birth: a determining passage
Childbirth, though natural, represents an intense moment for the baby. The passage through the maternal pelvis, uterine contractions, and sometimes the use of instruments (ventouse, forceps) or emergency cesarean create significant pressureon the newborn’s delicate structures.
As a specialized pediatric osteopath in Bern, I’ve worked in close collaboration with midwives for over 14 years. This collaboration allows me to understand precisely each birth’s progression and adapt my care to each baby’s specificities.
When to consult a baby osteopath in Bern or Bulle?
Preventive consultation
I recommend a consultation within the first weeks of life, ideally between 2 and 6 weeks, even without apparent symptoms. This session allows to:
- Check the baby’s overall body balance
- Release residual tensions from pregnancy and birth
- Promote harmonious development
- Prevent future discomfort
Signs requiring consultation
Consult a baby osteopath if you observe:
- Breastfeeding difficulties or sucking problems
- Plagiocephaly (flat head) or cranial asymmetry
- Torticollis or marked preference for one side
- Persistent colic or digestive troubles
- Reflux (GERD)
- Sleep disturbances or unexplained crying
- Restlessness or apparent discomfort
- Following difficult birth (ventouse, forceps, cesarean)
My approach as a baby osteopath in Bern and Bulle
Extremely gentle and safe techniques
The techniques I use for infants are specifically adapted to their fragility. The pressure applied is comparable to the weight of a coin on the skin. These subtle manipulations allow releasing tissue tensions without any risk to your baby.
My approach respects:
- The fragility of developing bone structures
- The sensitivity of the immature nervous system
- Each baby’s rhythm and reactions
- The parent-child bond during consultation
Comprehensive and collaborative care
My specialized training in pediatric osteopathy and my 14 years of experience with newborns allow me to offer comprehensive care. I regularly collaborate with:
- Midwives
- Pediatricians
- Lactation consultants
- Perinatal psychologists
This interdisciplinary approach ensures the best possible support for your child and family.
Baby osteopathy consultation process
A session typically lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour and includes:
- Detailed history: discussion about pregnancy, birth, observed symptoms
- Observation: assessment of posture, spontaneous movements, asymmetries
- Osteopathic assessment: gentle palpation to identify tension areas
- Treatment: gentle techniques adapted to your baby’s specific needs
- Advice: recommendations for home, positioning, carrying
Your baby can be asleep, awake, or even nursing during the session. I adapt to their rhythm and needs.
Baby osteopathy: results and follow-up
Most babies show improvement from the first session. Thanks to their extraordinary adaptive capacities, effects are often rapid:
- More peaceful sleep from the following night
- Improved sucking within a few days
- Reduced colic in 2-3 sessions
- Better postural symmetry progressively
Depending on the issue, 1 to 3 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart are generally sufficient. Preventive follow-up may be suggested at certain key developmental stages (sitting acquisition, walking onset).
